Week of August 31st: Happy Labor Day!

The summer is unofficially over and the autumn-like weather continues unabated. The weather is perfect for celebrating Labor Day in the park or backyard with family and friends. Perhaps you’re heading out to the Delaware, a lake, or small ponds to cast some poppers or streamers. The local rivers need some water before the fish, in the few pools still holding fish, can spread back out to make things sporting.   The dearth of rain this summer is a problem with one solution and there isn’t much rain in the forecast.

Frustrating? Yes.  One thing that is kind of interesting to do is visit your favorite spot now and see what the river bed looks like.  It is that low right now - I could count the rocks below the tree at Brown’s corner on River road today when I pulled over for a look on my way into the shop.   I have not verified this myself , but word is there’s one local tributary that has ceased cascading below a certain point. I can attest that someone planted Old Glory in the middle of the SBR above Hoffman’s Crossing bridge.  We may be grateful in a few weeks to see any holdovers before the stocking in October.

Aside from still water fishing for warm water species, it is time for tying caddis, eggs, midges and nymphs, and start loading the fly box for the trip on the horizon.

See you out there, Roy B.
