Week of November 2nd: Saving Time

Week of November 2nd: Saving Time

It has been Fall for a while, but this weekend feels like it. The thermometer and frost on the windshield didn’t need to announce the arrival of some cold air from the North.  It was chilly for trick-or-treaters on Friday and windy all week.  Unfortunately, another highly anticipated rain event didn’t move the dial on the flows, but the anglers coming into the shop and on the interwebs are boasting about their catches.

I was out early Saturday and Sunday morning and may be one of the few that appreciate the extra hour of light (fishing) in the morning on Sunday.  Now that nights are dipping below forty degrees, the only real bug activity moving forward, aside from midges, are going to be stoneflies and BWOs.  After seeing a few fish making boils on the surface each morning, it was  hard sticking to fishing on the river bed or further up in the water column in the deeper pools.  It turns out moving to a faster, shallower run was the trick.  Even if the rain didn’t raise the water level, it seems to have helped move the fish around. Once things warm up with the sun, fish are looking to eat and they’ll leave safer, deeper water for rich feeding grounds where nymphs and scuds also take advantage of the rising water temperature. Eggs and egg sucking leeches, sculpin, and chironomids round out the mid–fall menu.

Join us Saturday morning for Fly-Tying 101 (register online) and Thursday evening in the shop for open tying nights!  If you missed Sud-n-Bugs last week, you can join us next time.  Guide trips are available as long as the water is soft!

See you out there,  Roy B.
