Week of May 25, 2026 - Memorial Day

During this national day of remembrance, South Branch Outfitters hopes everyone spends time reflecting on the sacrifice so many made for our nation. Their courage and dedication to the principles of Democracy and Freedom humbles us who enjoy the benefit of living in America.
This past week started with the anticipated heat-wave. Luckily the weather broke with clouds and increasing precipitation and we saw water temperatures drop from nearly eighty degrees to sixty one in short order. While it is nice to be fishing on warm, sunny days those are the conditions least conducive to catching fish. Trout seem to know the clear water and blue sky open the aperture for predation. Overcast and slightly soggy days are best. The bugs seem to enjoy the variation in weather - the sulphurs react to breaks of sun and BWOs will positively blossom after some rain.
Stocking ceases after this week. There is one more round ‘o trout entering the system and there’s lots of bugs for the fish to get after. Sulphurs are still here and soon, the Light Cahills will join to be followed by the early Isonychias. Isos are a great hatch since their nymphs are one of the few good swimmers. They happen to be on the larger side as well, so they make great dry flies for dry dropper rigs.
Pheasant tail (PT) nymphs have been absolutely on fire this spring. Try a bead head PT with a smaller PT of the same variety behind. Change out the bead for some partridge hackle and you have a nifty wet PT. PT dries can mimic those Isos I mentioned if tied in #12 or even #10. Midges and BWOs are go-to until you see the Sulphurs in noticeable numbers. Streamers are going to work, too, especially after the jolt a few inches of rain brings.
Fantastic spring fly fishing continues! Stop by the shop for all your angling needs.
See you out there,
