Week of January 19th 2025: Frost Is On

Week of January 19th

Week of January 19th

It is going to get cold again!   Happy fishing to those bold enough to brave the cold this week.  The low water once again reveals where real deep holes are when levels are closer to year to year averages.  Keeping guides free of ice and adjusting indicators and tippets for depths will add to the challenge of numb fingers and toes.  Things have not changed since last report - same flies and techniques, but the cold nights will slow things down even more than the overnight low and sunny days we enjoyed until the snow came along.  Fish were chasing streamers and really getting active the warmer things got last week.  That is about to end for a bit.

Take extra care to layer up, tuck-in, and have a spare pair of clothes - just in case - back at the parking spot.

With Bubba and friends added to the KLG and the Musky fishing well, there is only the cold to contend with - or you could take a trip to the Edison Fly Fishing Expo this coming weekend.

A third option while waiting for temperatures to come back up by next week is to start tying for the early spring!  Line up some rows in a box with the hatches in chronological order - or fill a whole box with each: stoneflies, blue quill, red quill, Hendricksons, with BWOs mixed in.  We have everything you need - including spots in Fly tying 101 classes for beginners on Saturdays. Check availability online.

Some great looking fish were just stocked, but please take care to limit their exposure to the air.  Release the hook while they are still in the water as best you can and whenever possible.  A small towel is another good thing to keep with you to dry your hands after releasing a fish.  Be safe and watch your step!

See you out here, Roy B.
