Califon Spring Trout Fest

We're getting ready for Califon Spring Trout Fest tomorrow and the gang came out to help us stock the fish for the Kid's Derby portion of the contest which runs from 8am until 12 noon. Vern Mancini brought over 400 beautiful Rainbow, Brown, Golden and Tiger Trout. Registration is required and donations are accepted. Looks like we'll have some nice weather. Fifteen of the trout were tagged and they will have prizes attached from local restaurants and our vendors. We will give out our derby awards at the Califon Island Park at 12:30pm. Several of our vendors and their representatives will be on hand as well including Winston, Scott, Douglas Outdoors and G.Loomis fly rods, Korker Boots, Ross/ Abel and Winston fly reels. Everyone is chipping in to make this an exciting day at Califon Park. This will be followed by a One Fly fishing contest from 1pm - 3:30 pm. Eligible anglers will tie the fly that they will use under the watchful eye of Central Jersey Trout Unlimited volunteers who will also be on hand for a fly tying demonstration. The prize for the winner is a Winston Nimbus 9' 5wt fly rod. A casting contest will also be held. Anglers will all cast the same 9' 5wt NRX LP from G. Loomis and navigate a series of stations and the angler with the fewest total number of casts will be the winner of a IMX Pro series rod from GLoomis. The whole event runs from 8am until 4pm. Tim Flagler, recently returned from Argentina is holding a Euro-Nymph Clinic in the morning at the Fishing Cabin on River Road. The clinic is sold out! But we're already thinking about the next one, likely on dry fly fishing.

Caddis and Baetis were the story this week although there were still some Hendricksons around. Don't be surpised to see a little morning action on dries followed by solid subsurface action during the day. It is time for the LaFontaine Sparkle pupa emergers trailed behind a nymph. I expect to see March Browns on the water any day and the Sulpurs will be next.
