San Rafael Wilderness:
A recent trip with Lexi, the pack
pooch, has left me permanently touched by the beauty of the San
Rafael Wilderness. This
area is not typically known for the mild climate and abundance
of water we were so graciously provided. But our rain soaked
winter has sparked the growth of
many
a wildflowers that paint the landscape and leave the mountains
glowing green. However do not let this beauty distract you from
staying safe while enjoying this wilderness terrain.
Here are
some tips we found might help you while traveling this area:

Tip #1-
Prepare yourself with both hiking boots and water shoes.
Many and almost all trails will require river crossings,
some of these are quite deep and require you getting wet.
Having a water shoes will save your feet from hiking in wet
boots. |

Tip #2-
Trails are not noticeably marked and many are overgrown. Be
sure to bring a good map and compass to keep you on your way.
We suggest the San Rafael Wilderness map guide by Bryan Conant.
This is a very detailed field map that will most certainly be
useful at some point |

Tip
#3- Tick and Bug Repellent. There are a good amount of flies
wherever you stop, and the ticks are ferocious. Protect
yourself.

| |
Tip #4-
Bring plenty of water. Although creeks and rivers are flowing,
it is best to be well prepared once leaving a watershed area.
